A federal judge has halted the sale of Viagra at an online pharmacy, after it was revealed that the online retailer had purchased it from Canada.
The Food and Drug Administration said in a statement on Monday that it had stopped the sale of the drug at the Canadian online pharmacy, and that "the availability and quality" of the drug "are still being studied."
The FDA said the sale was "a significant step forward in the fight against counterfeit drugs and for consumers to be aware of the risks associated with taking these products," and was "necessary to protect the public."
The agency also warned that "as with any drug, a consumer's health should be evaluated under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional."
The online pharmacy has not revealed the actual contents of the order, and the FDA said that it had never received any reports of people taking more than one dose of the drug at one time.
Canadian consumers were not told of the risks of taking Viagra, and the FDA said the products were not intended for personal use.

We are aware of the challenges that may be presented by this regulatory decision and are working with regulatory authorities in the region to ensure the safety and quality of these products and to address any safety concerns related to the use of these drugs in consumers.
In a separate statement, the FDA said that it had not received any reports of people taking more than one dose of Viagra at one time. It added that "as with any drug, a consumer's health should be evaluated under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional."
The agency said that it would continue to monitor the safety of the drug and would take "umerous actionable steps to minimize the risk associated with taking Viagra," including making a safety announcement and providing the public with more information about the safety of the drug.

Canadian consumers who purchased Viagra from a Canadian online pharmacy in July were treated in a similar manner to those in the US, with one in three being treated with Viagra. However, the FDA said that it had not received any reports of people taking more than one dose of Viagra at one time.
The agency said that it was working with regulatory authorities in the region to ensure that the safety and quality of the drug remains at "equally high levels."
